The local government of Estepona is vying for financial assistance through the project ‘Estepona, garden of the Costa del Sol, green and sustainable city’, which aims to enhance public facilities and services. Estepona City Council remains dedicated to the sustainable urban development model that it has been cultivating for the past decade. In order to introduce new initiatives that foster advancement towards modernization and sustainability, the council will be applying for a 20 million euro grant in the latest round of European ERDF funds for Integrated Action Plans of Local Authorities. The municipality is pursuing this assistance within the framework of Sustainable Urban Development, under the European Regional Development Fund for the programming period 2021-2027, with the implementation period extending until 2029. The integrated action plan ‘Estepona, garden of the Costa del Sol, green and sustainable city’ has a budget of 20 million euros, with 85% of the funding coming from ERDF sources and the remaining 15% covered by the City Council itself. The healthy financial state of the municipality, with up-to-date payments to the Treasury and Social Security, as well as a surplus, enables Estepona to compete for this new funding opportunity. Through this endeavor, Estepona aims to continue its trajectory of modernization and sustainable transformation by focusing on urban revitalization, maintaining its status as the Garden of the Costa del Sol. The city intends to further develop its green and sustainable model by safeguarding and enhancing its natural, archaeological, historical, and ethnological heritage. It also plans to continue enhancing the urban landscape through ongoing improvements, promoting public facilities and services, and implementing climate change resilience measures through energy and water efficiency, as well as awareness and prevention strategies. The new initiative will prioritize enhancing municipal services and facilities across the municipality, creating new spaces for sports and healthy activities, mitigating the impacts of climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting local commerce and products, and integrating digital tools within the Public Administration. Specific actions outlined in the Estepona Integrated Plan include the establishment of new river corridors, energy upgrades in public buildings, the installation of solar panels in municipal infrastructures, the development of green spaces, cultural events in Mirador del Carmen, sports initiatives, and the revitalization of urban spaces. These initiatives have been designed with citizen input in mind. Estepona has demonstrated a high level of success in utilizing European funds, with close to 90% execution rate of the aid received in the 2016 call for European Regional Development Funds for Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development. The previous project, which included municipal co-financing, focused on enhancing the old town as a key tourist destination, improving public facilities, and modernizing municipal offices through technology integration.
