The local government in Estepona is moving forward with plans to strengthen security along the road to La Cala, a crucial connection between the town center and surrounding areas, following damage caused by recent heavy rainfall. A tender has been issued by the City Council for the construction of a retaining wall to address issues with landslides on the slope supporting the road, which have been exacerbated by the rain and runoff. The project aims to reinforce the road surface of the La Cala route, linking the eastern part of the urban area with various dispersed parts of the municipality situated above the highway. The intervention will involve building a section of earth retaining wall with riprap to stabilize the slope where landslides have occurred due to runoff. Additionally, measures will be taken to manage surface water flow, diverting it away from the road to prevent further damage. The La Cala road is a key route for local residents, providing access to agricultural, livestock, and maintenance areas. It is also heavily used by vehicles, including heavy traffic, due to the diverse activities in the vicinity. The recent collapse of part of the road’s supporting slope near Avenida Litoral underscores the urgency of the situation, with the La Cala river and stormwater contributing to the instability. The City Council has prioritized the replacement of the damaged containment system to mitigate the risk of future landslides and ensure the safety of road users. This project, with a budget of 86,434 euros and a timeline of one and a half months, is part of the Estepona Tourism Sustainability Plan supported by EU Next Generation Funds, focusing on road recovery and maintenance.
