The recent project to improve the Velerín tower, located next to the coastal corridor, has been completed, creating a new green space of 5,000 square meters. Estepona’s mayor, José María García Urbano, expressed that this initiative aims to revive the historical watchtower, built in the late sixteenth century, and complement the coastal corridor development. The surrounding area of the Velerín tower has been enriched with the addition of various Mediterranean plant species. Citizens can now easily access and admire this valuable heritage site, previously inaccessible. Moreover, the monument has been equipped with scenic lighting for nighttime enjoyment, along with street furniture to appreciate the green space and sea views. José María García Urbano emphasized that this project not only highlights the municipality’s rich heritage but also enhances the recreational opportunities provided by the coastal corridor. The Velerín tower is part of a series of seven watchtowers along Estepona’s coastline, remnants of the defense system against pirate invasions that persisted until the nineteenth century. The City Council’s efforts to restore the city’s historical legacy are evident, including initiatives like opening the Castillo de San Luis to the public, repurposed as an exhibition space in the old town.
