A diverse program has been organized by the Consistory to encourage reading among all age groups. Estepona Town Hall has prepared a lineup of cultural events to mark International Book Day, featuring appearances by acclaimed individuals like Manuel Vilas, a finalist of the prestigious Planeta Prize, and the poet and publisher Ben Clark. Alongside this, the fourth edition of the Bookface contest will be conducted, along with activities tailored for children. An innovative initiative in the area will see the establishment of ‘Libros Libres’ spaces, where residents can freely exchange books. Festivities on the 23rd will kick off at noon at the Town Hall, commencing with the prize distribution for the winners of the ‘IV Bookface Contest’, which celebrates the art of blending with a book cover. The top three photographs, judged on creativity, technique, and originality, will receive cash rewards of 150, 100, and 50 euros respectively. Notably, the municipality will introduce ‘Free Books’ spaces dispersed throughout the city, resembling wooden houses, for book donations and exchanges to promote reading with the motto ‘take it, read it, and share it’. These spaces, operational year-round, also welcome book donations from citizens. Designated locations for the ‘Libros Libres’ spaces include Plaza de Las Flores, Botanical Park Orquidario, Paseo Marítimo, Parque de Las Mesas, Central Park, Cancelada, Isdabe, Nueva Atalaya, and Children’s Park of Arroyo Enmedio. Furthermore, at 5:30 pm, a dramatized Storytelling session titled ‘The Book of Stories’ will take place at the Children’s Room ‘Elvira Lindo’ in the Municipal Library, where La Gatika Producciones will bring Disney tales to life through games, music, dance, and riddles, offering a story to the first 50 attending children. The program continues at 6 pm with the Reading Club at the Library of Contemporary Cultures, featuring ‘The best book in the world’ by Manuel Vilas, and at 8 pm, a Literary Workshop on ‘How to read and write poems’ by Ben Clark, requiring prior registration at bcc@estepona.es for free admission. On April 24, Manuel Vilas will present his book ‘The best book in the world’ at 8 pm at the Library of Contemporary Cultures. International Book Day, observed every April 23 globally since 1988 under the auspices of UNESCO, aims to boost reading habits, support the publishing sector, and safeguard intellectual property rights through copyright.
